Blue Bloods Family Suffers Tragic Loss Ahead of Final Season Premiere: ‘I Will Forever Miss Your Voice’

Veteran actor Ed Wheeler, who has appeared in many TV shows and movies, as well as on stage, has died at age 88. Wheeler guest starred in six episodes of Law & Order as different characters and appeared on Third Watch and New York Undercover. His final onscreen role was in 2010 during Blue Bloods’ first season.

Wheeler’s wife, Messeret Stroman Wheeler, told Deadline that the actor died on August 21 at a New Jersey hospital of respiratory failure due to pneumonia complications. “His life was a testament to perseverance, creativity, and the power of generosity and kindness,” she shared in a statement. “Ed will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.”

On October 7, his wife posted a tribute on Instagram, writing: “With a Heavy Heart, I Share My Ed’s Passing. In loving memory of my beloved husband, Ed Wheeler. You brought light, laughter and love into every corner of my life and the lives of all who knew you. Your talent, dedication and passion were unmatched — whether on stage, in front of the camera or behind the scenes. From national commercials to the esteemed Negro Ensemble Company, your presence was felt and cherished.”

The tribute continued, “My Honey Ed, you were more than just a public figure; you were a guiding light, a supportive partner and my heart. We built a life and created art together, and your legacy will continue to inspire. I will forever miss your voice, your wisdom and your generosity.”

She added, “To all who knew Ed, thank you for your love and support during this time. Let’s remember him for the joy he brought into our lives and the profound impact he had on the world. Rest in peace, My Honey. You will always be in my heart.”

Wheeler was born on February 18, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York. He got his start acting in TV commercials for Luvs diapers, Reynolds Wrap, Sudafed, and Pepcid AC, before landing a role in two episodes of the PBS series Watch Your Mouth in 1978.

His first film role was in Broadcast News in 1987, starring William Hurt, Albert Brooks, and Holly Hunter. Wheeler has appeared in a number of movies, including Presumed Innocent, Thinner, Godzilla, Daylight, Mickey Blue Eyes, Head of State, and The Good Heart.

Wheeler also guest starred on Law & Order six times between 1992 and 2004 and appeared in Ed, Whoopi, Hope & Faith, Third Watch, New York Undercover, Cupid, and One Life to Live. He played Councilman Welsh in a 2010 episode of Blue Bloods, his last role.

On stage, he performed in Zooman and the Sign, The Dance on Widow’s Row, and The Waiting Room, among many other shows.

Wheeler received the Living Legend Award from the National Black Theatre Festival in 2017 for his contributions to American theater and the entertainment industry. He and his wife also established a production company together and co-executive produced the 2023 short film Keepers of the Flame.
