Tom Selleck reflects on his hit show Blue Bloods ending after 14 years: ‘An awful lot of people aren’t ready to say goodbye’

Tom Selleck opened up about the upcoming conclusion of Blue Bloods during a new interview with TV Insider that was published on Friday.

The 79-year-old performer has portrayed Frank Reagan on the hit police procedural show, which is set to end with its upcoming fourteenth season, ever since the program’s debut.

The actor – who is currently preparing for the release of his memoir – expressed that he was not looking forward to the series’ conclusion, and stated that he had learned to ‘love the work’ over the years.

Selleck went on to speak about how, although Blue Bloods’ shooting schedule was occasionally difficult, he enjoyed being on set.

‘I’m not counting the days so I can do something else…Sometimes the hours are a little harder because I’m older, but so what? I want work as long as they’ll have me,’ he said.

The Magnum, P.I. star then opened up about Blue Bloods’ fanbase, which would likely not be pleased by the end of the show.

‘CBS will find an awful lot of people aren’t ready to say goodbye to it. The show’s more popular than ever, and I think [numbers] will increase with the interest this year. We’re certainly not out of ideas,’ he stated.

Selleck also discussed Reagan, and opened up about one of his character’s internal dilemmas that had carried over the show’s past thirteen seasons.

‘He picks fights because he’d like somebody to take the weight of this responsibility [off] his hands and fire him. But he has a hyperactive sense of responsibility and he’s stuck with it,’ he said.

The performer concluded by speaking about the Reagan family’s weekly dinner, which he described as the ‘audience’s favorite part’ of the show.

Selleck recalled: ‘When I saw the eight-page dinner scene in [exec producer] Leonard Goldberg’s pilot script, I said, “They’re going to cut that, aren’t they?” And he answered, “No, that will be a centerpiece of the show.”‘

Blue Bloods, which was co-created by Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess, made its debut on CBS in 2010.

The program is centered on a family that works in various areas of law enforcement.

In addition to Selleck, the show stars performers such as Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan and Steve Schirripa.

Blue Bloods has become a favorite among fans, and it currently holds an average audience score of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes.
