“I felt an obligation”: Tom Selleck Put Himself Through an Experience Agonizing Enough to Make Any Grown Man Cry For ‘Blue Bloods’

With a voice of gravitas and an enigmatic on-screen presence, nobody could have pulled off the character of Frank Reagan better than Tom Selleck.

The cast of the iconic Blue Bloods show is feeling blue and rightly so. The show is coming to an end after 14 glorious seasons with Tom Selleck at the helm. What the series has done best through the years is blend the aspects of a procedural police show with a hearty family drama. Regardless, Frank Reagan presides over the affairs on both fronts.

Created by Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess, Blue Bloods has been a long-standing series with great reviews and viewership numbers. However, the story is sadly wrapping up and is currently in its last season. Fans, much like the cast, are mourning the end of yet another delightful show.

Tom Selleck Attended the Blue Bloods’ Final Shoot

With a voice of gravitas and an enigmatic on-screen presence, nobody could have pulled off the iconic character of Frank Reagan better than Tom Selleck. While many know him for his performance in FRIENDS as Monica’s infamous older boyfriend Richard, it’s his charming persona in Blue Bloods that really brought him to the forefront of television shows.

He led the show both as an actor and his character on the show. As he put out fires in various episodes throughout the show, we got a deeper insight into his role as a Police Commissioner and a patriarch who is just trying to keep his family together. Naturally, Selleck has been the saddest in saying goodbye to his character and the show.

Even after he filmed all his scenes for the final season, he joined the cast for the last day of filming by flying back across the country after wrapping up another shoot. He told TV Insider,

I watched the last scenes with Bridget and Steve (Schirripa] and then Donnie and Marisa [Ramirez]. It was hard, but I didn’t want to just stay home; I wanted to be there, and I felt an obligation to share the experience.

Showing his support to the cast and truly standing by them through this gut-wrenching experience, Selleck has managed to make everyone love him more which nobody thought was possible. The incredibly kind and good-hearted actor is known for his sincere gestures, making him one of the industry’s nicest people to work with.

Tom Selleck believes the show was taken for granted

The actor has frequently voiced his stance on not making Blue Bloods end even after 14 awesome seasons. He wishes for the story to go on and he would love to continue playing Frank Reagan in the series for as long as he can. Even towards the end, its popularity is unquestionable with a 9th ranking among the top 100 shows of the year.

One thing that always frustrates Selleck is the network’s tendency to take the show for granted. He claimed,

I’m kind of frustrated. During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods but about it still being wildly successful… My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go. So how do I feel? It’s going to take a long time to sort all of this out. I remember after the weekend [of the final episode’s shoot], I said, “I’ve got to get to bed early tonight because I have to do my dialogue for Monday.’” Well, there was no Monday. It’s just going to take a while.

Poetically, the last scene Selleck filmed for Blue Bloods was very much like the first scene he filmed years ago. The family gets together for dinner as the curtain drops on one of the most widely loved shows of all time.
