Blue Bloods is coming to an end with Season 14, and with the CBS show biding farewell, fans are wondering if Frank Reagan retiring on Blue Bloods. It would, after all, be a fitting end to the long-running show. For others, however, there is an appeal in the show ending with the status quo, and the idea that even if we aren’t seeing it, things continue as they always have. Thankfully, we have an answer to the question.
What we know about whether Frank Reagan is retiring in Blue Bloods
Blue Bloods showrunner Kevin Wade was asked about Frank’s possible retirement during a recent interview with TV Insider, and he gave a very definitive answer, saying that Frank would stay in his job for as long as he could. According to Wade, Reagan isn’t the type of person who would spend his retirement hanging out with friends or taking up new hobbies. That means the current New York City Police Commissioner will likely remain in his post until the series ends, and if Wade is to be believed, is likely to end the series as Commissioner.
Tom Selleck, who plays Reagan, has been vocal about his desire for more Blue Bloods, even though the show has been announced to be ending with Season 14. But there have been hints that there could be more coming in the Blue Bloods universe, even if it’s not another season of the show, with Paramount Global co-CEO Brian Robbins hinting that a new series set in the Blue Bloods universe was in the works during the Paramount annual stockholders meeting.
For now, though, the fans still have to look forward to the back half of the final season of the show which is set to consist of eight episodes. The episodes are set to premiere in the fall. The first ten episodes of the season have already aired. As Wade has already made clear, it is unlikely we will see Frank Reagan decide he wants new challenges in those eight episodes.
Blue Bloods is, after all, built around Reagan being the police commissioner of New York City. This is why, for Wade, it would not make sense for him to retire. “I’m pretty sure that Frank would stay in his job until the series ended,” Wade told TV Insider. “We didn’t really pursue that avenue because the show is built on him being the police commissioner of New York City. So to take a detour during the last mile, if this is the last mile, I don’t know what he would be doing down at the hardware store or having coffee with old buddies during the day. I always have to look at stuff that generates stories. Police Commissioner of New York generates stories. He’s the CEO of 35,000 cops.”
And there’s also the fact that Reagan retiring would mean someone else taking the reins, which would probably be very hard for someone like Frank to handle. And honestly, if this were to happen, it would be something we’d want to see on Blue Bloods. If we don’t actually have time for the show to go into a storyline of Frank retiring and how he agonizes over it, then let us just imagine that he is the Police Commissioner of New York City forever.
